Keith Countermine

GUILDERLAND — Keith A. Countermine was a devoted father and husband who loved his children and grandchildren dearly, said his brother, Jeff Countermine. 

Mr. Countermine died on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, with his family by his side, after a long battle with leukemia. He was 66. 

Born on Feb. 24, 1953 to the late Irving and Ruth (née Hanlon) Countermine, Mr. Countermine became a star athlete at Guilderland High School, according to his brother. He made the All Suburban Council team as a lineman in football, went to the state wrestling championships as a heavyweight in the 250-pound category, and threw the discus and shot put on the track team. He graduated from Guilderland High School in 1971. 

Mr. Countermine worked for 28 years as a corrections officer at the Attica correctional facility, retiring in 2007.

Mr. Countermine was very involved in his community and in local politics, having served as the chairman of the Republican Party in Attica and on the board of assessment review in Attica.  

He also was a member of the Attica Lions Club and a past district governor of the Lions Club. He belonged to Masonic Lodge 462 and the Royal Arch Masons. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Attica Fire Department, an assistant junior-varsity football coach for Attica High School, and a member of Saints Joachim and Anne Catholic Church. 

Mr. Countermine was a diehard Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees fan, his brother said.

Keith A. Countermine is survived by his wife, Dawn (née Salty) Countermine, and three sons, Kevin Countermine and his wife, Ruth, of Darien Center; Kyle Countermine and his wife, Karen, of Ocala, Florida, and Ken Countermine and his wife, Melissa, of Attica.

He is also survived by his two brothers, Ed Countermine and his husband, Leonard, of Rensselaer, and Jeff Countermine and his wife, Jeanne, of Altamont, and by 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 

His parents died before him, as did his grandson, Ian Solberg Countermine, and his sister, Cindi (née Countermine) Lehnert.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, Jan. 25.

So sad to read of Keith's passing in the Altamont Enterprise.  He was a stand out in High School and a very decent guy.
